Read John 20:1 – 19
“Dear Woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?”
John 20:15 NLT
Early on the first day of the week, the third day after the crucifixion Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of Jesus, and Salome took it upon themselves to take care of Jesus’ body. They brought spices to anoint Him. But much to their amazement, upon arriving at the tomb they found the stone had been rolled away. According to the gospels, the women ran to the disciples to tell them what they had found. But in the gospel of John, it is told that Mary Magdalene was there looking for Jesus and crying.
Jesus came close enough to see that she was crying and asked, “Who are you looking for?” She was looking for someone she loved. Someone whom she walked with, talked with, and made meals for. The one who healed her and delivered her from her past. Her action showed how deeply she cared for Him. Suddenly, she heard Him say her name. Not knowing it was Jesus talking, she assumed it was a gardener. Oh! But when she realized who it was she was filled with excitement. She turned toward Him and cried out. She must have wanted to put her arms around Him. He couldn’t allow it at that time and instead told her to go to the others and tell them. Mary ran to tell the disciples she had seen the Lord!
What about you?
Like Mary in the garden that morning, will He be able to come close enough to see right into your heart, say your name and ask, “Who are you looking for?”
Are you looking for a friend? Someone who understands what you are going through? Someone, to walk with and talk with? You will find Him there. He is a friend who sticks closer than a brother, (Proverbs 18:24.) When we know Him, He calls us his friend. (John 15:13 & 14)
Are you looking for a healer or provider? He healed a paralytic. He healed a blind man and a woman with an issue of blood. In fact, Jesus healed many. The book of Mark has the account of many healings. (Mark 1:34) He still heals today.
“Jesus is the same, yesterday, today, and forever.”
Hebrews 13:8
He is also a provider. He provides for all of our needs when we put Him first. (Matthew 6:33) (Phil 4:19)
Are you looking for a Savior, a Redeemer? Jesus came to save us! He lived, died, and resurrected so that we could live eternally with Him. He took the punishment for our sins. God sent Him here because He loves us so much. (John 3:16) Even Job declared that “My redeemer lives” (Job 19:25) In fact, throughout the Old Testament God promised a savior and He delivered one in Jesus.

This Holy week when you find yourself looking for the meaning of it all, let Jesus come close and examine your heart. He will meet your need, whether you are looking for a friend, a healer, or a savior. If you’ve come looking for any one of these, you have found them all, and so much more. Mary Magdalene knew who she was looking for. Do you?
“…if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10
